Data Proposal:Decreasing Enrollment of Minority Students at SRU

Slippery Rock University has been advertised as a diverse campus, but is it?

Diversity can be somewhat of a buzzword for admissions. Colleges want to increase their diversity score. Slippery Rock University’s acceptance in diverse minority students has been decreasing. According to College Factual, SRU’s diversity score is ranked 59 out of 100, just over halfway. However, breaking down the diversity status into racial diversity, SRU is ranked 2,018 out of 2,718. Lower than acceptance would like it to be. Students can benefit from learning and meeting other peers of different ethnic backgrounds. In a predominantly white campus, SRU is 85.4 percent white, not leaving much room for other ethnic diversities. With the numbers already low and the rate of minority students decreasing, I want to look into the specific numbers as to why specific minority groups are decreasing in acceptance or attendance of Slippery Rock, compared over the last 5 years. Although Slippery Rock is considered to be in the middle of the pack in diversity nationwide, that doesn’t constitute the lacking levels of minority groups on campus. For this data visualization project, I plan on using a bar graph to map the diversity changes throughout the past five years. In order to receive more information I plan to interview Michael May, the Director of Undergraduate Admissions and Amanda Crow, the Associate Director of Undergraduate Admissions.
