Underrepresented Ethnic Minority Groups on Campus Since 2014

Updated: Nov 26, 2019

Currently, in the fall semester of 2019 there are a total of 814 students on campus who identify as an unrepresented minority. That totals just about 13% of the 6,968 full-time undergraduate students, 5,983 of them identifying as White, Non-Hispanic.

Diversity is something that most college strive for, according to Michael May the Director of Undergraduate Admissions, Slippery Rock still has ways to go in making sure that there is access to diversity.

"We're preparing our students for a world that's going to look a lot different than it does today," May said.

After collecting data and comparing the enrollment of minority groups on Slippery Rock's campus from 2014 to present, it was necessary to break the data into male and female enrollment to develop more of an understanding.

From breaking down the first minority group, the most prevalent minority group on campus is Black, Non-Hispanic. Although from 2014 the numbers have stayed relatively constant, varying slightly.

Here, although one of the more unrepresented minority groups on campus, the numbers for the American India or Alaskan Natives were stronger in 2014 with the males decreasing significantly in 2019.

Hispanic males seemed to experience a rise from 2017 to 2018, dropping in 2019 where females steadily increased from 2016 to present.

It was interesting that both males and females from 2017 to present dropped and then stayed constant with the same numbers for both genders.

Similar to the Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander data, the numbers stayed constant with gender throughout the last three years.

Viewing this pie chart, one can see that the Slippery Rock campus is overwhelmingly White with the biggest minority groups being Black, Non-Hispanic and a Two or More Races. Like May said, Slippery Rock has ways to come on diversity but tries hard to make the freshman class diverse.

"We're very focused on making sure every one meets the academic qualifications to have the Slippery Rock experience," May said.
